Strange but Delicious! You can travel worldwide in search of ketchup potato chips, but you’ll only end up upset and empty handed – unless you come into Canada. That is right! This northern country is one of the few places where ketchup flavoured potato chips are plentiful and popular. The salty and tomato-y flavor is so yummy and mouth-watering that non- Canadians are clearly missing out on this delicious snack. This is a very Canadian treat and one can only guess that the reason it isn’t sold in other countries, like the U.S., is because the average potato chip eater has yet to discover this taste sensation. Now, you might be thinking something like, “Why can’t I just take a ketchup bottle and a bag of regular chips, mix them together, and make my own ketchup chips?” The quick answer is that you can, but it really isn’t the same thing. Ketchup chips made by snack-food companies have a ketchupy flavor that doesn’t exactly have the same taste of ketchup from a bottle. Manufactured ketchup potato chips are so tasty and addicting that you just can’t eat one or two. Another reason not to make your own ketchup chips is to avoid excessive mess. If you pour a bottle of ketchup over regular potato chips, you end up with a soggy mess of chips covered in ketchup that might be better to eat with a spoon rather than your fingers. Manufactured ketchup chips are easy to grab by any casual snacker and can be picked up between the fingers and the thumb with only a minor mess. Try some the next time you visit Canada and you won’t be disappointed! (1)、 Where are ketchup chips found exclusively? (2)、 (3)、 (4)、 (5)、
The Great Fairy Hoax Are alleged species like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness monster real beasts on earth or do they only exists in the minds of con men and their unsuspecting believers? Despite what many might see as mounting evidence against their existence, the jury is still out. It is a pity the same cannot be said for the great fairy hoax of the early 20th century. This hoax may cause you to burst with laughter now, but at the time many believers defended its credibility. This very well-planned hoax would continue to fool people for years to come! Having appeared throughout Western cultures since the middle ages, the legend of fairies is widespread. Arguably the most famous of fairy hoaxes is the Cottingley happen to be young cousins living in the north of England. The photographs depict the two girls with the supposed mythological creatures. Taken in 1917, the photos divided their growing audience, including the parents of Elsie and Frances. Of course many suspected they were fakes, but others including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries, saw them as authentic evidence of the existence of these spirits. It was not until 1981 that Wright and Griffiths finally admitted the photos were actually designed using cardboard cut-outs of the tiny winged creatures. If fact, Wright was an accomplished artist and photo technician so it is difficult in a way to call this hoax a lame attempt to fool people. After all, they managed to fool half the world, didn’t they? (1)、 When did the fairy hoax originally take place? (2)、 (3)、 (4)、 (5)、
Dolphin Speak Bottlenose dolphins identify themselves with a signature whistle. However, scientists have found no evidence of a dolphin language. For example, a mother dolphin may whistle to her baby calf almost continually for several days after giving birth. This acoustic sound helps the calf learn to identify its mother. Besides whistles, dolphins produce clicks and sounds that resemble moans, trills, grunts and squeaks. They make these sounds at any time and at considerable depths. Sounds vary in volume, wavelength, frequency and pattern. Dolphins rely heavily on sound production and reception to navigate, communicate, and hunt in dark or murky waters. Under these conditions, sight is of little use. Millions of years ago, toothed whales developed echolocation, a sensory tool that enabled them to survive in dark aquatic environments. It is a process in which an animal explores its environment by sending out sounds and listening to echoes as the sounds bounce off objects in the ocean. With sound traveling better in water than other signals, it was advantageous for dolphins to evolve echolocation, a capability in which sound energy is used, in a sense, to “see” underwater. The term “sonar,” ound s n avigation nd anging, is used to describe dolphin echolocation. In fact dolphin a r communication and navigation is considered to be the most advanced sonar capability on Earth, man-made or natural. (1)、 What could be used as another title for this article? Celebrity with a Big Heart Not all celebrities are the same when it comes to being generous and giving to charity. The one person who comes to mind however is Oprah Winfrey. She has donated millions of dollars to various charities and organizations, with the majority of her money going to three of her favorite foundations. They are The Angel Network, The Oprah Winfrey Foundation, and The Oprah Winfrey Operating Foundation. Winfrey uses her talk to show to publicize The Angel Network and says that 100% of any donation you give, goes directly towards funding a project. Some examples of the projects include helping girls to become community leaders in South Africa and assisting in the rebuilding efforts of the Gulf Coast. She runs The Oprah Winfrey Foundation on her own and no donations are accepted because it’s funded by a large grant. Through these organizations, Winfrey has truly established herself as an altruistic person. She has extended her financial aid and influence throughout the world. Besides these organizations, Oprah has volunteered her time with a variety of other charities. She is a big supporter of many causes including treating HIV and AIDS, fighting climate change, and building schools for children in the developing world. On The Oprah Winfrey Show, she has talked about various issues including the importance of people supporting charities through donations. She even gave members of her audience $1,000 each to donate to a charity of their choice. Oprah Winfrey, without a doubt, will go down in history as one of the greatest altruistic people of the 21st century. (1)、 Where does Oprah Winfrey donate most of her money? (2)、 (3)、 (4)、 (5)、
Future Jobs of 2030 Engineer? Lawyer? Forget about them! In 2030, some of the most popular jobs could be a vertical farmer, space pilot or body part maker, according to a new report. A report was recently commissioned by the U.K. government. It was conducted by asking a unique group of future thinkers to list what science and technology jobs they think would be most popular by the year 2030. They were asked to consider advances and developments which may be achieved between now and then. As you may expect, the results are quite intriguing. For example, computers and robots are expected to transform the fields of medicine and farming. In medicine, the invention of machines that grow limbs and organs will allow for new jobs in professional sports and the military. On the microscopic level, “nanomedicine” would allow scientists to treat cancer and other diseases at the cellular level. Listed below are some of the more interesting occupations you or your future children may be interested in pursuing. Space pilots, tour guides and architects: Space tourism will allow for space pilots, tour guides and the architects that will allow them to live on the moon. Vertical farmers: The future of farming leads straight up into the sky. Vertical farms in densely populated areas could significantly increase food supply. Classroom avatar manager: Intelligent avatars will replace classroom teachers and professors. Human interaction will still be needed, but only to properly match “teacher” to student. (1)、 Why does the writer suggest forgetting about careers in law and engineering (2)、 (3)、 (4)、 (5)、
Mazes are almost as old as human civilization. They appear in ancient tales, like the Greek myth of the Minotaur and have continued to capture the imagination over the centuries. They have also featured in several notable psychological experiments which are now seen as important contributions to our understanding of how spatial memory and awareness works. Homeward Bound Considered the grandfather of maze-related experiments, the first research to test the maze-learning abilities of animals probably took place at Clark University in the laboratory of prominent psychologist Edmund Sanford. Their experiments were conducted by William Small and were inspired by a conversation he had with his fellow graduate student Linus Kline. Both men were interested in the “home-finding” ability of rats. When Kline mentioned having seen a network of runways used by rats living under the porch of an old cabin on his father’s farm, Sanford was reminded of the famous maze at Hampton Court, a royal palace in England. Small and Kline created a replica of the maze and set about examining how rats moved around it to find their nest. Although the research seems a little outdated and unscientific by today’s standards, it did yield some important findings. For example, although two of Small’s rats were blind, they managed to learn the routes of the maze just as easily as their full-sighted fellows. This established that vision was not required for spatial perception. (1)、 According to the passage, how long have mazes existed? (2)、 (3)、 (4)、 (5)、
