To the Grown Children A) I stood in the driveway and watched my grown children drive off into the distance. I looked down the road until I could no longer see their vehicles. B) I slipped back inside the house and just walked through the rooms for no reason in particular. I was just missing them already and looking for signs of their having been here. There were pillows on the floor and a few toys lying around where the children had been playing. C) I smiled at the little fingerprints on my mirror. I didn't wipe them off. I thought back to the time when I tried so hard to keep the fingerprints off the mirrors and doors when my children were small. Now, I wanted the tiny fingerprints to stay so that I could see them there just a little longer. D) I walked into the kitchen and there on the back of the sink (洗涤池) was a bottle brush that had been left behind. "Ah, even Tessa left something behind," I announced. "I wonder what else has been left behind," I said out loud to no one in particular. My husband heard me and joined the search for things left behind. E) It seems like every time our family gets together, something is left behind. When I call my children to come and get what they have left behind, I am usually told, "Oh, just keep it until I come back the next time," or "Hey, I really need that, would you mind mailing it to me?" F) I walked around the house, finding more things that had been left behind: a toothbrush, a ponytail band (发圈), an angel figurine (小雕像), a pie pan and the inside of a turkey fryer (炸锅). I was really kind of enjoying myself. It gave me something to do, after they left, to keep my mind from desperately missing them. G) "Human things left behind," I pondered (沉思) to myself. It seems there is one thing that is left behind in every occasion: Memories are always left behind. I reasoned. What a precious thing good memories are to us. I thought about how each item left behind reminded me of the person it belonged to and the story surrounding it. H) Memories happen even when we aren't aware of it. The stressful and difficult moments often become memories that we look back on later with laughter and joy. There are the stories of the future when one day someone will say, "Remember when ..." and everyone laughs. I) Then, of course, there are some memories that need to be left behind. The memories of past hurts, bitterness and anger should be left behind forever. These are the things that we should never keep until the next time, mail back, or bring with us to our next visit. J) Yes, I stood in the driveway and watched my grown children drive off into the distance. And I remembered my own parents once doing the same. I knew then that I would one day be the one standing from the driveway feeling my heart drive off down the road. As Elizabeth Stone said, "To have a child is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body."【缺少答案,请补充】
Five Reasons to Travel with Your Kids A) As the temperature shifts from spring to summer, many families put the finishing touches on summer vacation planning. Usually, vacation means leaving behind the comforts of home to experience a new place or destination. It can also mean finding some much-deserved relaxation. B) But the situation changes when vacations include traveling with children. Kids – even older ones – can make even the simplest tasks more difficult. They also have a knack (诀窍) for derailing (毁掉) relaxation. Take eating out as an example. Last week, I took my three kids out to dinner. We selected a kid-friendly restaurant. My kids, although well behaved, still managed to make a mess. C) Situations like these cause even the bravest of parents to think twice before embarking on a vacation with kids that. Should traveling with kids has many benefits both for the parents and the children. Still, it can be a wonderful experience you should consider traveling with your kids this summer. Here are five reasons why. D) Strengthen Family Bonds Family trips create a number of experiences together while on vacation. Sharing a roller coaster ride (过山车) or fishing off the back of a boat, the time you spend together creates memories that strengthen family bonds. E) New Responsibilities Life is different on the road once traveling here as to get out of our normal routine. This difference requires both children and adults to step into new roles. A navigator is necessary to study maps and find new and interesting places to visit. A financier is needed to ensure that cash flow stays within budget. Decisions need to be made as to who will repack the car each night. Both kids and parents will learn new skills as they adapt to new roles and responsibilities inspired by travel. F) Opportunities for Bravery The adventure of traveling away from home can also provide opportunities for children to be brave and demonstrate courage. On a recent vacation trip with my family, we decided to do some rock climbing. My oldest daughter was terrified, so my youngest daughter stepped up and went first. After seeing her sister's accomplishment, the older one decided that she could also climb the rock and attempted it herself. Both were excited by what they managed to accomplish when they faced their fears and pressed forward. G) Learning Experiences Another benefit of travel is that it provides opportunities for unique learning experiences. Most of school learning is done through books. Traveling, on the other hand, can give children real-world application to what they've been studying during the school year. Just taking kids to an art museum can connect what they've learned about artists in school to the actual paintings hanging in the museum. History comes alive when visiting historical sites. Even a simple walk through a forest can add tangibility to what they first read about in school, travel can add rich context and substance to their classroom knowledge. H) Improved Grades The University of Georgia conducted a study to determine the effect of study abroad programs on academic performance. The study showed that students who studied abroad had improved academic performance when they returned to campus. Think how much more impact this kind of travel would be during the formative years! Exposing our kids to new cultures and places builds their sense of curiosity and wonder.【缺少答案,请补充】
Camping A) In selecting a place to camp, there are several very important things to look out for. B) Be sure you are near a supply of drinking water. A spring is best, but even the lake or river will do if the water is pure and clean. The water at the bottom of a lake is always much colder and cleaner than the surface water. When I was a boy, I used a simple device for getting cold water which some of you may like to copy. I took an old-fashioned jug and fastened a strong string to the handle and also fastened this string to the cork of the jug. The jug was weighted so that it would sink, by means of a piece of stone tied to the handle. We used to go out to the middle of the lake where the water was the deepest and lower the jug over the side of a boat. When it reached bottom we would give the string a sharp tug and thus pull out the cork. The bubbles coming to the surface showed us when the jug was full. Then we hauled it on board and had cold, clear, drinking water from the lake that on the surface was warm enough for swimming. C) The next most important thing in selecting a camp is being near a supply of firewood. A week in camp will consume an amazing amount of wood, especially if most of your meals are cooked over an open fire and old stumps are burned before training. In most sections there is plenty of dead wood that we can use for camp fires. This does not mean a lot of big logs and trees. There is no excuse for destroying trees when someone knows how to use an axe. In another chapter I will tell you something about the proper use of axes and hatchets. For the present it is sufficient to state that an excellent place for practice, and your efforts will be appreciated by your family, which would not be the case if large trees were cut down. We learned in woodcraft to use the heaviest dry wood, like hickory (山核桃), which burns long and hot. D) Almost any kind of wood will burn when it is dry, but it takes experience to know the kinds of trees that burn best when they are green. If there is no dry wood in the neighborhood, and we are obliged to cut a tree down to get our supply, it is very important to pitch our camp near enough the best "green wood" for the camp fire. Hickory, although birch is excellent. Hickory is also the best dry wood. Other trees that will burn well when green are cedar, white ash, locust or white oak. There are comparatively few places, however, where dry wood is not available and of course it is always best to select such a place.【缺少答案,请补充】
