Just recently, I noticed that I had been avoiding American youth sports events since we relocated from Switzerland to the United States. All of us can face feelings of awkwardness, amazement, irritability, and even anxiety when inserted into a new culture. A survey of 196 human resource managers conducted by the U.S. National Foreign Trade Council revealed that 58% of all failed expat assignments were due to poor adaptation. Clearly, I'm not alone in dealing with culture shock. But what is culture shock anyhow? It's a state created by the experience of leaving behind a familiar culture and moving to a foreign, new, and unfamiliar environment. Third, celebrate small wins. Don't wait until you've achieved your ultimate goal to feel a sense of accomplishment. Reward yourself for milestones along the way. Go out for a nice meal, buy yourself something you've been wanting, or plan an enjoyable experience. Small celebrations keep you feeling motivated and re-energized for the road ahead. Be proud of what you've achieved so far; every step forward is progress. Staying motivated when times get tough is challenging, but maintaining the motivation and determination to see your dreams through to reality is what separates those who achieve their goals from those who don't.
