A recent study looked at how people connect in the age of social media and also at how connected they feel in general. The study focused on people in seven countries: Brazil, Egypt, France, India, Indonesia, Mexico, and the United States. The findings show that a majority of people in these countries feel fairly connected or very connected to others. However, the degree of connectedness varies. More than 80 percent of French, Egyptians, and Indonesians feel highly connected, and the majority of Mexicans and Brazilians express the same sentiment, but in lower percentages. In-person interactions are the most common ways to connect across all countries, followed closely by social media usage. The role of social media is significant, with at least a third of people in all countries, except India, reporting daily use for interactions. Notably, in Indonesia, Brazil, and Mexico, people use social media to seek support from others nearly as often as they do via phone calls. These shows often create artificial drama which is not reflective of real life. Besides, some are set up to humiliate people, and I find it distasteful.
