Bill Gates co-founded Microsoft, the company that made him the world's wealthiest man. He earned money by masterfully guiding the world into the era of networked personal computers. He's now retired from his role as Microsoft's CEO and instead devotes himself full-time to philanthropy through the Bill &Melinda Gates Foundation. Microsoft's big break came from Bill Gates telling a fib. Gates called up a computer company called MITS and told them that they had developed a BASIC interpreter for their microcomputer, the Altair 8800. Gates and Allen developed it in a hurry, presented it to MITS, and made the sale. They officially founded Microsoft one month later, in April 1975. But that didn't stop him from reviewing-and often rewriting -every single line of code that the company released. Bill's keen eye for detail ensured that Microsoft always shipped quality software. I got to go inside the Googleplex in Mountain View. See kids? Dreams do come true! So how can you get a tour of Google's headquarters? Well, there are only two ways: 1. Work for Google 2. I had started working in the office of Mathew Brothers three months earlier as assistant to the production manager. I liked my job, which involved answering the telephone, writing emails to customers and filing all the papers that Mr. Carson, my boss, gave me concerning quality control. Both my boyfriend and I are crazily busy with work. We both work 70-80 hours a week, and working less than 60 feels like vacation. I work in an international company, which means I'm routinely gone over the weekends. My boyfriend works as a sales representative and we both travel quite a lot. While our backgrounds are different, the jobs that we do are increasingly similar. This is how we make it work. Friday night is our date night. Nothing is allowed to get in the way of that night, and no phones are allowed at the table. If I'm gone for the weekend, we try to sit together for a couple of hours to talk. Saturday mornings we have a "family meeting" to go over our travel schedules for the following weeks, and discuss which nights we have to work late. Again, if my boyfriend is out of town, we do this over the phone. We pay someone to clean our apartment twice a month so we don't have to spend what little time we have together cleaning --plus, both of us like the clean apartment. In 1997, I moved to Bangkok to teach English writing at a Thai university. My home was three miles on foot from the well-known Jatujak weekend market. It was the cheapest place to buy anything. On days when I needed to shop, I'd run one way to the market, do a few laps around the park. finish my shopping, and take the bus home. One day, I jumped onto the bus home when I finished shopping. Only that day, the bus was particularly slow and even stopped. Everyone around me was patient and smiling. However, I got impatient, got off the bus and started running. With my shopping bags.
