Stress can be fantastic. Or it can be fatal. It’s all up to you. Constant change in the work environment creates opportunities, dangers, and stress. If there were little or no stress in our jobs, they would be boring. However, when there is too much stress, one can be overloaded and become ineffective. If we have too little stress, we can start new projects to generate some activity increase our stress to an optimal level. When there is too much stress, we can attempt to reduce it, but this is much difficult. The best plan for controlling stress is to learn to control our reaction to stress inducing events. In a real sense, most stress is self-created. While we cannot always control external events generating potentially stressful input, we can learn to control our reactions. When you accept responsibility for your own life, including your attitude and your level of stress, you learn that even when you can’t change the situation, you can change your reaction to the situation. “Burnout”(没有劲)is an over-used and over-abused term frequently noted in connection with discussion on stress. Everyone who dislikes his/her job claims to have burnout. Some workers get burnout the first day on the job. Despite the abuse of the term by the free-loaders and goof-offs(游手好闲者), there are real examples of burnout. In brief, burnout exists when the rewards from doing something no longer seem sufficient to justify the effort to do it. It is easy to burnout on boring, repetitive tasks. It requires a real effort not to burnout in this situation. It also occurs when there is no opportunity for creativity and growth in a job. Few workers burnout while they are still growing and developing. They do it when opportunities for growth have been exhausted.
