As working women continue to receive better and better wages, housewives still work at home without receiving paychecks. Should a woman who works at home, doing the housework and caring for children, be paid for her services? In a 1986 study at Cornell University, it was found that the value of the services of a housewife averaged $$11,600 a year. This rate was based on a family composed of a husband, wife, and three young children. The $$11,600 is what the husband would have to pay if he hired others to take over his wife’s household work. The researchers concluded that it would be fair for husbands to pay wives according to government guidelines for least amounts of wages. Another plan for rewarding women who work at home has been suggested by Dr. Johnson, a former Secretary of Health and Human Services. He says that full-time housewives should be allowed to pay social security taxes, with their employers (that is, their husbands) offering part of the payment. He feels that the present system is unfair. He said, “If you work in a store you can qualify for Social Security, but if you stay at home and raise a family, you can’t qualify for it.” 1. Now in the U. S. the woman working outside home can get __________. A) an average payment of $11,600 a year B) more and more money C) the same pay as those doing housework D) as much as their husbands 2. The researchers at Cornell University suggest that __________. A) policies be worked out on women’s wages B) women go out to work instead of working at home C) husbands hire others to do their housework D) husbands pay their wives for their work at home 3. The expression “full-time house wives” in Paragraph 2 means __________ A) wives who don’t like to stay at home B) wives working outside home sometimes C) wives who can’t do any housework D) wives staying at home doing housework 4. Why do some people feel that husbands should pay their wives for their housework? A) Because wives’ work at home has its value. B) Because wives can’t qualify for Social Security. C) Because husbands are employers. D) Because raising a family needs money. 5. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A) Bosses refuse to pay wages for female employees. B) Full-time housewives are required to pay social security taxes. C) Husbands are paying the social security taxes for their wives. D) Women working at home can’t get social security.
Most people buy a lot of gifts just before Christmas. But some people think they buy too much. They have started a special day called Buy Nothing Day. They don’t want anyone to go shopping on that day. Buy Nothing Day is November 29. It’s 25 days before Christmas. The idea for Buy Nothing Day started in Vancouver, British Columbia. When we talk about intelligence (才智),we do not mean the ability to do well in school. By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving, especially in a new situation. If we want to test intelligence, we need to find out how a person acts. For instance, when in a new situation, an intelligent (聪明的) person thinks about the situation, not about himself. He tries to find out all he can, and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it. He doesn’t feel ashamed that he failed; he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special view on life, a special feeling about life, and knows how he fits into it. If you look at children, you’ll see great differences between that we call “bright” children and “not-bright” children. They are actually two different kinds of people. For example, the bright child really wants to find out about life – he tries to get in touch with everything around him. But, the “not-bright” child keeps more to himself and his own dream-world; he seems to have a wall between himself and life in general. 1. According to this passage, intelligence is the ability to . A) act quickly B) do well in school C) study well D) deal with life 2. In a new situation, an intelligent person __________. A) is always sure of the outcome B) cares more about himself C) will think about the situation D) behave in a special manner 3. If an intelligent person failed in doing something, he would _________. A) learn from mistakes B) feel ashamed of it C) try to forget about it D) make up what he has done 4. Even if an intelligent person is very young, he ________. A) tries not to fail in a new situation B) cares a lot about how to avoid mistakes C) is very interested in other people’s experience D) knows how to fit into life 5. Why does the writer say “bright” and “not-bright” children are different kinds of people? A) Because bright children are more interested in study. B) Because not-bright children are more eager to learn about life. C) Because they treat things around them differently. D) Because they have different interest and abilities
This book has arisen from a project to improve the writing of university students. A growing number of students at the National University of Singapore (NUS) have a good command of the grammar of English but lack trainings in the skills necessary for coherent and effective writing. Hence a materials project to provide this training was initiated in the English Language Proficiency Unit and supported by the University. The project team consisted of ten members under my leadership; Professor J. M. Sinclair of the University of Birmingham acted as consultant. Begun in January 1980, the Project took more than three years to complete, progressing through needs analysis to repeated drafting, piloting (小范围实验) and revision of the materials. At the end of this period the materials had essentially the shape, content and character of the final production, and full credit must be given to the original project team for their creative industry and contribution. When the prospect arouse of publishing a book for an international market, it was decided that a small editing group would accomplish the most difficult task, and the materials were extensively revised for a wider audience. Thanks are due to the Administration of the National University of Singapore for help and support. The book was later revised to be published for _____________. A) domestic readers B) audience abroad C) students only D) other projects
A Report Subject: Customer complaints Date: October 23rd, 2010 Prepared by: Doug Smith As I mentioned in my October 15th notice, we have received many customer complaints about service at three of our restaurants in the New York area. I visited the restaurants in question to examine the situation. Most of the complaints we received are related to the following points: — slow service — unclean tables and dishes — mistakes in orders I visited the restaurants in Newark, New Brunswick, and Trenton, where I spoke to the managers and full-time and part-time staff. A) offer an incentive scheme B) hire younger part-time employees C) spend more money on facilities D) train the employees frequently
Like all buildings, hotels can have a fire. Plan what to do when you check in. You won’t have time to make a plan during a fire. If there is any sign of fire, call the Front Desk immediately. Give your name, room number, and a brief description of the situation. If your family is with you, determine a meeting place outside the building so you’ll know everyone is safe. Feel the door to see if it is warm. If it is, do not open it. If it is not warm, drop to your knees and slowly open the door, but be ready to shut it tightly if a cloud of smoke should roll in. If the corridor is clear, head for the exit. Do not stand upright (直立), but keep low to the floor to avoid smoke. When you reach the exit, walk quickly, but carefully down the stairs. Tests conducted at the University of Pennsylvania’s Psychological(心理学的)Laboratory showed that anger is one of the most difficult emotions to detect from facial expressions. Professor Dallas E. Buzby confronted 716 students with pictures of extremely angry persons, and asked them to identify the emotions from the facial expressions. Only two percent made correct judgments. Anger was most frequently judged as “pleased”. And a typical reaction of a student confronted with the picture of a man who was very angry was to classify his expression as either “puzzled”, or “amused”, or simply “astonished”. Other studies showed that it is extremely difficult to tell whether a man is angry or not just by looking at his face. The investigators found further that women are better at detecting anger from facial expression than men are. Paradoxically (自相矛盾地), they found that psychological training does not sharpen one’s observation but actually to hinder (阻碍) it. For in the university tests, the more courses the student had taken in psychology, the poorer judgment scores he turned in. 1. The information in this passage centers around _______. A) the detection of anger from facial expressions B) the influence of psychology on observation C) the relation between anger and the other emotions D) the findings of Professor Dallas E. Buzby 2. The author uses the word “Paradoxically” about psychological training to imply that _______ . A) we can expect some contrary results B) we can expect such training to have the good effect C) the conclusion will be a wrong one D) we should expect such training to result in better scores
Unlocking Apple’s Secrets American telephone service company AT&T has paid millions of dollars to be the only US provider of Apple’s new device, the iPhone. But, it took 17-year-old George Hotz just two months of work to damage this investment. iPhone is a combination of an iPod, a notebook PC and a mobile phone. The New Jersey teenager recently published detailed instructions online about how to unlock an iPhone with some household tools and a set of software. He told the media that his unlocked iPhone can be used on networks other than AT&T’s network. His method allows people who don’t want AT&T’s service or who can’t get it. Especially overseas, to use the iPhone. So far, the iPhone is sold only in the US. Hotz isn’t alone in this. He’s got a Web-based group, which includes one programmer based in Russia. His method is one of several techniques that have appeared recently to break the technological locks. Others include a group calling itself iPhoneSimFree, whose solution involves only software changing. Hotz says the work he did isn’t illegal, and that the US digital copyright (数字版权) law allows phones to be unlocked. So far, neither Apple nor AT&T has commented on the unlocking techniques. 1. I discovered that in all the three restaurants the recommended training requirements had been ignored. Rita Penrose, the manager of the Trenton restaurant, said that she didn’t have enough staff and many part-time workers did not stay long enough to complete the training period. She believes the main reason is low wage. Based on my research, I suggest that we review our wage system, and offer an incentive scheme (奖励计划) to encourage part-time employees to stay. I also suggest that we improve our training program. 1. What is one of the customer complaints about the three restaurants? A) Bad service. B) Small space. C) Business hours. D) Poor management. 2.
